General note: Spessard Holland was born in Bartow, Florida on July 10, 1892. He served in World War I, graduated from Emory College in Atlanta (now Emory University) and attended law school at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Holland was elected to the Florida Senate in 1932, and became Governor of Florida in 1941. He served in the United States Senate from 1946 until his retirement in 1971.
